Seems like we just want more agency. Not in an absolute sense, but in a relative sense to our current state (we just want MORE). Remote work was nowhere as ubiquitous like 10 years ago and for some reason it's not enough now.

so true - we live in an age of unimaginable freedom compared to 20, 30, 50 years ago. The question is, now that we have the freedom, where do we point it? Rather than pointing it at ourselves, how can we use our freedom to contribute something to society and our communities.
I LOVE this piece - awesome job. For me freedom has become equated with escape... and to me that is running away from something. When we talk about freedom, we should actually be running towards something.
There is so much great nuance in here. It is entirely possible to not only work for an organisation as if you are in a loving and engaging relationship, but also believe that it can end at any moment - which is fine, then you can move on to somewhere else that you can contribute. Freedom doesn't have to mean going alone. Freedom can also mean conspiring together to create something we couldn't do alone.
I think freedom has been massively influenced with a western individualistic nature, where too often they are confused as being intertwined, when they can be separate.
This hit hard. I’ve been chasing “freedom from” for years—jobs, cities, constraints—only to realize I never really knew what I wanted the freedom for. Your line about clarity over escape reframed everything for me. Maybe the real flex isn’t freedom, but choosing purpose over possibility. Brilliantly written.
